Become a Sculptor

Michelangelo created what is considered one of the most incredible sculptures the world have ever seen. A true masterpiece. People travel the world to see it. They sit in awe while in it’s presence. You may be familiar with the sculpture. It’s called The David. It is housed in The Accademia Gallery in Florence, Italy.

David by MichelangeloThe David is, well, a sculpture of the Biblical hero David that killed the giant Goliath with a sling and a stone. It was carved from 1501-1504 from a flawed piece of marble. Originally another artist had been commissioned to create The David but had given up. Michelangelo didn’t allow anyone to see his sculpture until it was unveiled in 1504. After it’s unveiling somebody asked the artist how he created such a masterpiece? His answer? He said it was simple. I just chipped away all the rock that wasn’t David. What an answer.

Michelangelo was implying that he didn’t create the David. He implied the David was always there. Sometimes when we look at what we may be capable of, we get intimidated. So much to do, so much to learn, such discipline. As Michelangelo teaches us, it doesn’t have to be so hard. We need to realize that we already have what we are looking for; we simply need to visualize our potential hiding beneath the surface and chip away at what’s covering it. This can be a lack of confidence, courage or drive. It can be too much worry, fear or stress.

It may be negative thought patterns or those things that invade our time so unnecessarily. Regardless of what your excess is, you can chip it away. It may not happen in a day, a week or a month but rest assured, we can keep chipping away at whatever isn’t in alignment with our goal. What would you do if you couldn’t fail? Seriously, if you knew anything was possible and nothing could hold you back, what would you try, who would you become? What if all those attributes were already inside you but simply hidden below the surface? The David was created in 1504, but was it really created then? Or did it always exist inside a slab of marble? It’s all a matter of perspective.
    David-2
Maybe you want to take a big step. Maybe you want to create a new skill set. Maybe you want to be an expert at something. You are already a masterpiece. The skill set is already in you, it just can’t be seen with the naked eye yet. Visualize what you want to be just as Michelangelo visualized the David. Then take out your chisel and start to chip away at all the unnecessary “rock” that holds you back. Like Michelangelo, this chipping may take some persistence, time, effort and energy but that’s what always leads us to the bigger prize. What you want is already inside you! Start chipping away and unveil your masterpiece to the world.    Have a Happy Day, –

    Sincerely,
